National Blindness Control Programme is a 100% centrally assisted
programme implemented with over all objective to reduce the prevalence
of blindness and visual acuity below 6/60 in the country.

Under
the programme an Ophthalmic cell is attached to Indira Gandhi Hospital,
Kavaratti. A District Blindness Control Society is functioning
under
the Chairmanship of Collector cum Development Commissioner and
various activities under the programme is planned and implemented
by
the Society. In addition to providing eye care service to the people
the
following activities are carried out under the programme. |
- Vision screening of school children and providing glass free
of cost.
- Cataract survey covering 100% population.
- Conducting of Mega Eye Camp with the service of Specialist
Doctor from
the famous Eye Hospitals at mainland.
- Observance of World Sight Day with various IEC activities.
- Observance of Eye Donation Fortnight with various IEC activities.
- Conducting of IEC activities by display of hording, posters
and Banners.
- Providing financial assistance to NGOs for conducting IEC activities.
- Conducting training to the staffs on Eye care service.
