Lakshadweep
is an archipelago with a land area of 32Sq.Kms. and
is comprised of 10 inhabited islands and 17 uninhabited
islands, attached islets and 5 submerged reefs. The
inhabited islands are Kavaratti, Minicoy, Androth,
Agatti, Amini, Kalpeni, Kadmath, Kiltan, Chetlath and
Bitra. They lie about 220 to 440kms from Kerala coast
and at a distance of varying from 6 to 350kms from
one another. Kavaratti is the head quarter. These islands
are linked with mainland by mechanised vessels, ships,
Helicopters and Indian Airlines Services. |

According
to 2001 census the Lakshadweep has a population of
60595, which includes 31118 male and 29437 female.
In
the past, epidemics like cholera and smallpox used
to take a heavy toll of lives. Leprosy and Filariasis
were also rampant. Lack of facilities and doctors
besides ignorance and isolation caused by the difficulties
of transportation and communication were the main
reasons for the slow developments of health services.
After the independence, it has reached a fairly high
level of standard and soundness.The level of achievements
attained in the implementation of the various national
programmes for control / eradication of diseases
and also of family welfare programme including universal
immunisation programme and maternal and child health
activities has helped this U.T. to reduce the mortality
rates and improve the health status of the people
there by the maternal mortality rate has been reduced
considerably, Life expectancy is enhanced. Today
the infant mortality rate is as low as 25(National
66) and the maternal mortality is below 1 (National
4).
